"I think I just found a piece of Sanders' hair."
Nick's jaw clenched reflexively. Just a few hours earlier he had run his fingers through the same hair while they kissed, Greg half-heartedly swatting his hand away.
"Stop it, you're gonna ruffle it," he had said, but his grin had told Nick he didn't really mind.
Greg had looked great in his suit, exuding energy and excitement and looking forward to his first day in court.
"You look dashing," Nick had commented, looking him up and down with a smile. "You'll make the jury swoon."
Greg had grinned even wider, a light flush coloring his cheeks.
"You like it? Do I look professional enough?"
Nick had nodded, his expression turning serious.
"You are a professional," he had said, looking straight into Greg's eyes. "You'll do great in court."
Greg's smile had turned a little bashful at that, and he had bitten his lower lip before leaning in for another kiss, not really caring when Nick carded his fingers through his hair again.
And now they were collecting that same hair, covered in blood and dirt, and bagging it as evidence, while Greg was lying in a hospital bed, face swollen and bruised. Nick hadn't gone to visit him yet, he had rushed straight to the scene, but he had seen the pictures. The mere thought of what Greg had to endure made his stomach twist and his blood boil.
And then those stupid kids had to open their stupid mouths. He could see Warrick trying to warn him off, and he knew it wasn't worth it, he knew he should just ignore them and continue processing the scene, but he was beyond patience, beyond reasonableness, his self-control slipping as he punched that asshole in the gut. If Warrick hadn't physically dragged him away, Nick was sure he would have done to that guy what those animals had done to Greg. His Greg.
He barely heard Warrick's words as he tore off his gloves and angrily walked away.
