A/N: Written for McKay's first line challenge: write a drabble with the same first line as one of her stories. I chose 'In the Great Hall of Hogwarts, hundreds of white candles hung, suspended in mid-air, filling the room with a muted glow.' (Wicked Game 1)
All characters in the Harry Potter universe belong to JK Rowling. I'm just a devoted fan with an overactive imagination.
In the Great Hall of Hogwarts, hundreds of white candles hung, suspended in mid-air, filling the room with a muted glow. Severus Snape was sitting at the Slytherin table, staring down at his hands with unseeing eyes. Another school year was over. The students had already gone home and in a few hours he would be leaving as well. Normally he would feel relieved at the idea of spending two whole months in the quiet of his own house, but now... Now he kept thinking about Lupin. About the way he had turned and looked at him just before going away. Snape had expected anger, hate even. He had cost the werewolf the only decent job he'd had in years after all. But when he had met Lupin's eyes, all he could see was pity. A werewolf, a jobless werewolf wearing shabby robes, pitying him. The sight had made his blood boil.
He lifted his head. He used to sit here when he was a student, and his eyes would constantly stray towards the Gryffindor table, stealing glances of a lean boy with golden brown hair and a smile that made his heart skip a beat every time he saw it. A smile that had never been for him.
He clenched his fists and stood up, banishing the image from his mind. He had the feeling he would need some Dreamless Sleep Potion again tonight.
